A team led by Prof. Dr. Dirk Haller has demonstrated for the first time that defective mitochondria cause injuries in the intestinal epithelium and influence the microbiome. In this microscopic image of an intestinal organoid, which is a three-dimensional micro-tissue model, the outlines of the epithelial cells are shown in red, while the mitochondria are colored green. The researchers used intestinal organoids in their study to illustrate the injury in the intestinal epithelium.
