Symbiodolus bacteria in the reproductive tissue (IMAGE)
Caption
Symbiodolus bacteria in the reproductive tissue (ov = ovary, oo = oocyte) of the cereal leaf beetle Oulema gallaeciana. They are stained yellowish in color, while the nuclei of the host are stained cyan. Symbio- in the name of the newly discovered symbiont refers to a symbiotic relationship, while -dolus stands for the deceptive way in which the bacterium infiltrates the host. It was inspired by the Greek-Roman deity "Dolus" as the personification of deception and fraud. The species name clandestinus means 'secret' or 'hidden'. The name refers to the symbiont's ability to penetrate the host's tissues and remain hidden from the host's immune system. It also reflects the fact that the symbiont has long eluded scientific research. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation.
