Carbon-negative platform turns waste gases into valuable chemicals

A team of scientists from LanzaTech, Northwestern University and the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have developed carbon capture technology that harnesses emissions from industrial processes to produce acetone and isopropanol, known as IPA. These widely used chemicals serve as the basis of thousands of products, from fuels and solvents to acrylic glass and fabrics.

Mystery mechanism in small peptide shows big promise for fighting antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Researchers used neutrons at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to better understand how antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) could be used to kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria. By studying an effective AMP called aurein 1.2, the team pieced together the molecular mechanics behind the peptide’s ability to deal significant damage to bacterial cells. Their findings could inform new strategies for treating bacterial infections where antibiotics have fallen short.

Economic development honor among ORNL’s 5 federal laboratory awards

ORNL, TVA and TNECD were recognized by the Federal Laboratory Consortium for their impactful partnership that resulted in a record $2.3 billion investment by Ultium Cells, a General Motors and LG Energy Solution joint venture, to build a battery cell manufacturing plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee, that will employ 1,300 people. The honor is ORNL’s first-ever FLC award for economic development. Additionally, four technologies developed by ORNL researchers have won Excellence in Technology Transfer Awards.
