This summer, students and teachers from around the world will have the opportunity to communicate via e-mail with a scientific expedition to the arctic. Argonne chemist Ken Anderson will be one of six researchers traveling to Axel Heiberg Island, and will maintain contact via satellite link.

A collaborative research team has taken its first x-ray "movies" at Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (APS), a huge doughnut- shaped synchrotron radiation machine. The work involves studying novel materials under real, dynamic conditions. The team demonstrated a new ability to produce movies of structural changes taking place at the atomic scale.

Argonne National Laboratory has engineered a new microbe that serves as a catalyst for chemical reactions important to agriculture. Working jointly with three other Department of Energy laboratories, Argonne is developing the processes necessary for themicrobe to be useful.
