Mapping the underground abundance of iron oxide -- rust -- that provides the ideal home for pollution-eating bacteria is vital to harness bacteria to clean up chemical and radioactive contaminants. DOE awarded scientists at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory a bioremediation grant to develop a chemical tracer technique to derive detailed information about subterranean iron oxide.

INEEL researchers have developed a portable system that identifies chemical weapons inside warheads -- without opening the projectiles up. They recently evaluated rusty, World War II-era U.S. warheads uncovered in the Solomon Islands. The projectiles contained mustard gas, and can be safely destroyed in a chemical weapons incinerator.

The Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory has been honored with three R&D 100 awards from R&D Magazine. The three technologies are "Electro-Optic High Voltage Sensor," a small, nonelectric sensor for measuring electricity, "Rapid Solidification Process (RSP) Tooling," a thermal metal spray technology that reduces cost and time in producing industrial tooling, and "Malt-based Antimicrobial," a major breakthrough in pesticide research.
