Six universities, INEEL announce collaborative research projects

DOE charts 25-year vadose zone research effort

The U.S. Department of Energy has tasked the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory to lead the development of a science and technology roadmap to identify research over the next 25 years that would improve the ability to estimate subsurface contaminant movements. Known as the DOE Complex-Wide Vadose Zone Science & Technology Roadmap, the draft document calls for a better scientific foundation for decision-making with respect to the vadose zone.

INEEL creates a method to link energy use, greenhouse gases

The first step to reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is to determine how much is being produced by human activities. Engineers at the INEEL are developing a computer model to convert energy usage and the unique characteristics of an institution, such as energy efficient buildings, into a value for greenhouse gas production.

The Department of Energy's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory has created a dosimeter capable of simultaneously detecting two types of radiation-bundles of massless energy called gamma rays and tiny particles called neutrons. The dosimeter has been recognized as one of the 100 most significant technological achievements for the year 2000 by R&D Magazine.

Carbon diem: Grants awarded to research that seizes excess carbon dioxide

The Department of Energy recently announced grants to remove excess atmospheric carbon dioxide and store it out of harm's way. Researchers at the DOE's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, in collaboration with universities and other national laboratories, have been awarded almost $1.4 million to pursue projects that pull carbon dioxide out of smokestack exhaust and natural gas production lines.

Adding acetone to compost remediates chunk TNT contaminated soil

Like the Wicked Witch of the West, another danger can be melted away, only this time it's with a bucket of fingernail polish remover. Modifying a standard composting recipe, microbiologists at the DOE's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory successfully degraded chunks of TNT from TNT-contaminated soil. The report is appearing in this week's quarterly issue of Bioremediation Journal.

INEEL microbiologist joins Japanese on expedition to tap marine-methane deposits

The DOE's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory is pursuing the secrets of the methanogens -- microorganisms that produce methane-by analyzing samples obtained during the recent MITI Research Hole coring expedition at the Nankai Trough, off the coast of Japan. The expedition was sponsored by the Japanese Petroleum Exploration Company.

A mixture of thorium and uranium may provide cheaper, cleaner, safer nuclear power

Researchers from DOE's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory lead an eight-institution collaboration to develop a new fuel that promises to increase the time nuclear reactors can run between shutdowns while discouraging the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The institutions received a three-year, $3.3 million DOE Nuclear Energy Research Initiative grant to pursue the fuel's development.

Radiating relief: Researcher combats stubborn arthritis with neutrons

In collaboration with the DOE's Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory nuclear physicist David Nigg, physicist Jacquelyn Yanch of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has devised a new way to kill the synovium, the lining that overgrows and ruins a joint afflicted with rheumatoid arthritis, using neutron capture radiation therapy.
