Lawrence Berkeley National Lab researchers have determined that tiny crystals of lead in an aluminum matrix come in only a few specific "magic" sizes. The discovery may lead to manipulation of thermal, electrical, mechanical, and other properties in a range of important alloys.

Researchers have developed a sensor that, for the first time, can instantly detect the presence of toxic E. coli bacteria.
