Mismatched alloys are a good match for thermoelectrics

Using the supercomputers at NERSC, Berkeley Lab researchers demonstrated that the semiconductors known as highly mismatched alloys hold great promise for the future development of high performance thermoelectric devices. Thermoelectrics could play a key role in green energy production because of their ability to convert heat into electricity.

Diamond is one tough cookie

Using the Janus laser at LLNL and the Omega laser at the University of Rochester, Livermore scientists and Rochester and UC Berkeley colleagues showed that when shock waves are applied to diamond with powerful lasers, it can support almost a million times atmospheric pressure before being crushed.

Weak lensing gains strength

An international team led by a cosmologist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has extended the relationship between the x-ray luminosity and the mass of galaxy clusters as measured by gravitational lensing, improving the reliability of mass measurements of much older, more distant, and smaller galactic structures. These refined measurements will benefit both the understanding of dark matter and the nature of dark energy as well.

Soybean genome analysis reveals pathways for improving biodiesel

Soybean, one of the most important global sources of protein and oil, is now the first legume species with a published complete draft genome sequence. The sequence and its analysis appear in the Jan. 14 edition of Nature. The research team comprised 18 institutions, including the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute, the USDA-ARS, Purdue University and the University of North Carolina, supported by the DOE, National Science Foundation, USDA and United Soybean Board.

Opening new frontiers: First volume of microbial encyclopedia published

Two thousand years after Pliny the Elder compiled one of the earliest surviving encyclopedic works, and in the spirit of his goal of providing "light to the obscure," the US Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute has published the initial "volume" of the Genomic Encyclopedia of Bacteria and Archaea. An analysis of the first 56 genomes representing two of the three domains of the tree of life appears in the Dec. 24 edition of Nature.

SLAC/Stanford's Zhi-Xun Shen receives 2009 E.O. Lawrence Award

Zhi-Xun Shen, director of the Stanford Institute for Materials and Energy Science, or SIMES, a joint institute of the US Department of Energy's SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory and Stanford University, has been awarded the Ernest Orlando Lawrence Award by the Department of Energy. Shen, who received the prize for his pioneering work in materials science, is among six other distinguished awardees, announced on Dec. 16, 2009.
