After more than 25 years of experience in condensed matter physics, as a student, researcher and in high-ranking executive roles at neutron scattering sources around the globe, Jon Taylor brings a wealth of experience and accomplishments to his new position as Associate Laboratory Director for the Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  

The Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Type One Energy and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT), are partnering to establish a world-class high-heat flux (HHF) facility to evaluate how materials react under extreme conditions in a fusion device. The HHF facility will accelerate the development of plasma-facing components (PFCs), which experience the harshest operational conditions in fusion energy devices, and enable both private and public entities to qualify and validate the materials used in fusion pilot plant designs.

Shaun Gleason, director of the Partnerships Office at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been appointed to Tennessee’s Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council. Council members are appointed by the governor and provide a collaborative source of knowledge, expertise and information sharing to advance the state’s use of AI technologies.

Denise Antunes da Silva, a senior R&D staff member at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has been elected a Fellow of the American Ceramic Society for her outstanding contributions to the field of ceramics and materials science.

Brittany Rodriguez and Akash Phadatare of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Manufacturing Science Division have been named to SME's prestigious 30 Under 30 program for 2025.

Two engineers at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have been elevated to senior membership in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Researchers receiving the honor include Bryan Maldonado in the Building Envelope Materials Research Group and Jin Dong in the Interactive Controls Group.

Chemist Bruce Moyer, a Corporate Fellow at the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has won the 2025 Carl Hanson Award, the highest international recognition for achievement in solvent extraction. The International Solvent Extraction Community bestows the medal every three years based on nominations from the global community.

Researchers Sang-Ho Kim, An-Ping Li, Bronson Messer and Zac Ward of the Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory have been named Fellows of the American Physical Society in recognition of their outstanding impact in their respective fields.
